Want fuller, darker lashes? Bimatoprost — often shortened to "bimat" — is the ingredient behind products that stimulate eyelash growth. It’s the same active medicine used in some glaucoma drops, but when formulated for lashes it’s applied to the base of the upper eyelashes to help hairs grow longer, thicker, and darker.

Before you try it, remember this: in many countries you need a prescription. That matters because not every product labeled for lashes is genuine or safe. Talk to a doctor or eye specialist if you have eye disease, recent eye surgery, or chronic dry eye.

How bimat works and what to expect

Use only the product your doctor prescribes. Apply a tiny drop to a clean applicator and run it along the base of the upper lashes once nightly. Wipe off any excess and avoid getting it in the eye. Don’t apply to the lower lash line, and never share applicators or bottles.

Remove makeup and contact lenses before application. Put lenses back only after 15 minutes and if your eye doctor approves it. Store the bottle capped, at room temperature, and discard after the expiry date.

Common side effects include eye redness, itchiness, and mild irritation. Some users see darkening of the eyelid skin or increased fat deposits around the eye. Rare but permanent side effects can include darkening of the iris — this risk is higher with long-term use and with some prostaglandin drugs.

If you get significant eye pain, vision changes, severe redness, or swelling, stop use and contact a healthcare professional right away. Also stop if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding unless a clinician advises otherwise.
